BRIGADERS

As Brigaders there is so much to do and so many opportunities open to you. As well as more challenging badge work within Girls' Brigade, there's still the focus on Spiritual, Physical, Educational and Service topics but as Brigaders you are involved in picking topics that are relevant to you, where you can extend your current interests, i.e., dance, music, art, drama, sports or whatever, and have the opportunity to be introduced to new concepts, to think about who you are and how you fit into the world around you. Brigaders isn't all theory, its about getting out, getting involved and making a difference for yourself and those around you.

You can also take on the opportunities and challenges of Leadership Training, The Duke of Edinburgh's Award and Queen's Award and experience all they have to offer; see further down this page for more information.

  • 20 - 21 SEPTEMBER 2008: GIRLS' BRIGADE SCOTLAND AGM 2008 - Now I'll be the first to admit "AGM - (Annual General Meeting)" doesn't sound like a very exciting way to spend a weekend - but wrong! ... there's so much more going on this year, let me tell you all about it...
  • Hosted this year by Renfrew Division the AGM weekend is a chance for everyone (over the age of 16) involved in GB Scotland to get together - choose from drama, circus, media and dance workshops, arrange a trip to X-scape, some shopping at Braehead or tour Paisley (although I confess the tour of Paisley may appeal more to the "oldies") Meet GB'ers from all over Scotland. Lunch is provided and then after the formal part of the day, you should have time to try out the leisure facilities at the Glynhill before it's time to dust off those 'prom' dresses girls for the evening. 'Dress like a Superstar' because Hollywood is coming to town at the AGM themed dinner. Meal, entertainment and disco to follow, - My only worry is how you're going to pack it all in!! So whether you're a "Fresh-young-thing" or and "Oldie-but-goodie" the AGM weekend is for you!

BRIGADER (& WARRANT OFFICER) UNIFORM

BRIGADER AWARDS

Full Brigader arm band containing Explorer Stars, Junior Circles and Diamonds, Company Title and Service Award, detailing the years of service to the Company. All other awards can be earned in the Brigader Section, or in the case of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award and the Queen's Award, as a Leader as well, see details below.

BRIGADER TRIANGLES- Earned through GB Badgework based round the four areas of the programme; there are 25 topics to choose from under each of these areas so there's no shortage of choice, here are just a selection:

  • Spiritual: Christian Agencies; Issues for Today; Outreach; Symbols of Faith; Time to Think
  • Physical: Adventure Sports; Aerobic Fitness; Creative Dance; Cycling; Hill Walking; Specialised Individual Sports
  • Educational: Culture Vulture; Drama; Foods from other Lands; Look Good - Feel Good; Photography; Superwoman
  • Service: Catering for a Group; Conservation; Feed the World; Healthy Lifestyle; Rights & Privileges

(If there is a specific topic you wish to do for badgework that is not included in the current programme you can apply in writing to GB HQ for approval of a new syllabus. You must gain approval for the syllabus before starting the programme.)

Each year in Brigaders you complete four topics, (you can only do each topic once and it's best to do one from each section to keep the programme balanced), from the sections above to earn 2 points for each, you need 8 points to earn the first Brigader Triangle, 8 more points for the second, (16 in total), 8 more for the third, (24 in total) and 8 more for the fourth, (32 in total), which colour of triangle you earn depends on your school year:r: Red Triangle - S1 / White Triangle - S2 / Blue Triangle - S3 / Gold Triangle - S4 (Don't worry if you join Brigaders in S2, S3 or S4 you can take additional subjects if you wish to catch up with your peers.)

(S = Secondary school year)

BRIGADER BROOCH - Once you have achieved your four Brigader triangles another year's badgework will earn you the additional 8 points to take your total to 40 points overall, which earns the Brigader Brooch. (The 40 points must be made up of 6 points for each of the topics, Spiritual, Physical, Educational, Service.) Leadership training (see below for more details) can also earn you points for your Brigader Brooch.

Well done this is the highest Girls' Brigade "badgework" award, (and the second highest award in Girls' Brigade), you can earn, it represents several years of application and dedication at a time when your life is already full of school, exams, other extra curriculim activities, applications, jobs, colleges and universities!

LEADERSHIP TRAINING - Most of the Officers in our organisation were once girls in the Brigader section. It is a natural development, when you enjoy an activity, to want others to share your interest and enthusiasm.

The Leadership Training courses are meant to help each you become more self confident, skilled and experienced with the ultimate aim of helping and guiding others younger than yourself.

If your Chaplain or Brigader Leader asks if you are interested in going to a Leadership 1 training this is what to expect:

  • A meeting with other girls of your age from different Companies in your Division.
  • An opportunity to develop your skills under expert guidance.
  • A challenge to communicate with Officers and other Trainees in an informal atmosphere.
  • A fun filled five hours with Junk Craft; Communication; Keep Fit and Relationship.

Obviously, it is hoped that you will follow this up by going to Leadership 2 in your local area before progressing onto Leadership 3 possibly at a National Residential in order to become a Warrant Officer.

(Leadership Chevrons should be sewn on the outside edge of the righthand sweatshirt sleeve - just above the cuff with the V pointing down to the ground)

See How to Become an Officer for information on Officer Training to become a Commissioned Girls' Brigade Officer.
