HOW TO BECOME A GB: D of E LEADER
  • D of E have developed an online e-induction programme for any potential or existing D of E Leader. This is free to use and is the ideal training resource for any new volunteers. Using e-induction will help everyone understand essential information about the D of E and GB in Scotland, as the Operating Authority, strongly advise this online e-induction as a good starting point. This can be found on the D of E website, (live link below) - click on "Leader" link, then "Training" link to find "e-induction"

  • Next contact your GB Divisional D of E Co-ordinator, who will be happy to deliver an "Introduction to the Award" briefing for new Leaders wishing to be involved with D of E. This should be followed by regular attendance at GB / D of E National Trainings (see D of E Training & Qualifications Page)
  • It's important to encourage Brigaders and young Officers in your Company to take part in the Award. The Divisional Co -ordindinator should be able to deliver a lively presentation to both girls and parents if necessary. (The D of E also have some great material for this purpose on their website (link above) - "It's up to you")
  • As a trained GB officer, in conjunction with the D of E e-induction course and your co-ordinator's briefing, you are already qualified to manage the Volunteering, Skills and Physical Sections of the D of E programme. So pass on what you know ... offer your time and talents to help participants tackle these aspects of the Award. (NB - many of the activities you already cover with Brigaders for their badgework can also qualify for the D of E Award - by simply extending the length of time to comply with D of E guidelines)
  • Although you are now qualified to deliver the above sections of the D of E, your Divisional co-ordinator should be on hand to support and guide you until you feel confident to manage the D of E on your own - so don't be afraid to ask!
  • The Expedition Section however, requires further training on your part to be able to deliver this section to your Award group, see following link: Guidelines to become a D of E Expedition Leader NB. the First Aid Certificate - should consist of at least a four hour training on emergency first aid through a recognised agency, i.e. St. Andrew's Ambulance, Red Cross etc.
  • Got your Expedition & Outdoor Leadership Certificate, and want to take it further, what about additional Outdoor or First Aid qualifications? i.e. BEL Award (Basic Expedition Leadership - Sports Leaders UK) , Mountaineering ML & WGL (ML - Mountain Leader or WGL - Walking Group Leader) NB - D of E has funding for 16 - 25 year olds wishing to undertake the above outdoor / expedition qualifications.

FAQs
Q: Help! Our Company have never done the Duke of Edinburgh Award before, where do we start?
A: Complete the D of E e-induction course so you understand what D of E is all about, then contact your GB Division's D of E Co-ordinator for further training , plus help and advice.
Q: What materials do we need to get started and where do we get them?

A: Just contact GB HQ to purchase D of E material. The essential to start with is the D of E handbook (current - 6th Edition) - all other information can be downloded from the D of E website.

Q: Can GB Leadership Training count towards the volunteering section for the Bronze Award?

A: No, Leadership Training cannot be used for Bronze, but Leadership 1 & 2 can count towards the service for the Silver Award and Leadership 3 (Warrant Officer Training) and / or Officer Training can count towards service for the Gold Award, along with practical service in the Company.

Remember: Girls under the age of 18 can HELP with the younger sections but would NEVER be responsible for, or left alone with younger girls. / Girls 18 and over MUST complete a GB RM1 form as an Auxiliary Helper / Officer and have completed an Enhanced Disclosure Check before being able to HELP or take a more responsible position with girls in the younger section.
Q: Can GB Company Service be used for the volunteering section at Bronze Award?

A: Yes, under YOUTHWORK in the D of E Programme File, girls can help with the Explorer or Junior sections at Girls' Brigade for their Bronze Award.

Q: We have a girl who'd like to do a particular activity for a section of the Award and we can't find the activity in the Programme File, can she still do it?

A: Yes - first stop - look on the Duke of Edinburgh's Award web page (link at bottom of this page), they have some activities listed on the website that don't appear in the printed Programme File - mainly in the skills section. If you still can't find what you're looking for draft out a suitable programme of your own and submit it to GB HQ for approval, its best to wait until you have approval before starting it, just in case it needs major re-planning or is rejected.

Q: We don't have Officers trained to teach the expedition section, what are our options?

A:

  • Contact your Division's D of E Co-ordinator and if she's unable to train the girls herself she should be able to advise who else in your Division is qualified to do so, i.e. another GB Company Officer, or BB or other Award Group in your area ...OR ...the girls could participate with another group in your area attending and linking in with their training, practice and actual Expedition.
  • If there's no one else locally contact GB HQ for help and advice.
Q: We don't have enough girls to do an expedition on our own, how can we contact other groups participating in the D of E?

A:

  • You can contact your Division's D of E Co-ordinator. Your Division may organise Divisional Expeditions that your girls can participate in OR she should be able to advise you which other Companies in your Division are participating in the Award, and who to contact to link up your girls with their group.
  • If that has not helped, contact GB HQ for help and advice.

Remember: BB Scotland organise a National Open Gold expedition that GB D of E GOLD participants across Scotland can register for. See current info for more details.

Q: Must participants completely finish one level of the Award (i.e. Bronze) before starting the next level (i.e. Silver)?

A: Participants should be encouraged to complete their entire programme to acheive their Award before embarking on the next level. However, they may start on a section of the next level prior to completeing the previous one if they:

  • Have reached the minimum age of entry for the next level.
  • Obtain a 'Record Book' for this level.
  • Have completed that section of the previous Award.
  • Are not working on all three levels at the same time.

NB See Chpt. 5 of the D of E Handbook for advice on encouraging participants to complete their Awards

Q: Can you use a Girls' Brigade Camp as a Gold residential experience?

A: No you cannot use a Company / Joint Company or Division camp, however you could use a GB National Camp, or even an International Camp (Fonomarae). Contact GB HQ for details of these or check the current info on the website for these and other residential experience opportunities.

Remember: Approval for a camp / festival / conference / etc. to be used as a D of E residential experience MUST be gained from GB HQ PRIOR TO THE EVENT. Applications should be made in writing to Headquarters.

Q: Can you use a Camp America, or similar, as a Gold residential experience?

A: Camp America may be used, however the period of service counting towards the residential experience must be unpaid.

Remember: Approval for a camp / festival / conference / etc. to be used as a D of E residential experience MUST be gained from GB HQ PRIOR TO THE EVENT. Applications should be made in writing to Headquarters.

Remember the D of E is open to everyone and can be tailored for those with special needs to still provide a challenging programme, please contact GB HQ for help and advice on this.
